AFGL adds 100-point State Games follow-up in San Diego

AFGL put its State Games Follow-Up Tournament on the board for 1 p.m. Sunday at Welk Resort San Diego’s Oaks Course in Escondido, a 100-point stop that came right after the Cal State Games Region 1 50-point tournament. The setup turned one weekend in San Diego into a two-stage points chase instead of a single regional outing.

That is the real edge here. AFGL did not treat the follow-up as a throwaway extra round. By attaching 100 points to the same venue and the same weekend structure, the league gave State Games participants another chance to add to their standings, gave players a second swing at a high-value result, and opened the door for local newcomers who could step into a major event on a familiar Southern California layout.

The course fit the idea. The Oaks Course is listed as a par-3 setup, and that matters in FootGolf because precision usually wins over brute force. FootGolf USA describes the sport as kicking a soccer ball into a 52-centimeter cup in as few shots as possible, so shorter holes and tighter landing windows tend to reward control, touch and course management. On a course like that, mistakes show up quickly and clean strikes separate the field fast.

Welk has also made itself a reliable home for the sport. JC Golf says The Oaks course features a footgolf course available for tournaments, team outings, team building and parties, which explains why AFGL can stack a regional follow-up on top of the State Games weekend without changing venues. Cal State Games has kept footgolf on its summer calendar too, with a 2025 tournament at Welk Resort Golf Course in Escondido and Summer Games action running July 13-20 in San Diego.

The broader structure has been in place for more than a decade. FootGolf USA says AFGL was founded on November 19, 2011, and the first FootGolf tournament in the United States was held July 22, 2012, at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. AFGL’s own 2024-2026 update shows the tour continuing alongside U.S. Amateur Tour events, and the San Diego follow-up fit that model cleanly: one state-games stop, one extra points event, and a course built to keep players coming back.
