Aledo considers girls flag football after introductory clinic

The clinic was part of a larger conversation about whether girls flag football should become a new sport for Aledo girls. The Community News piece framed it as something to be considered seriously, not as a novelty, and the follow-up dates already point to a staged rollout. One post tied to Richey Delgado set the next clinic for Sunday, Aug. 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Vierling Field on the Daniel 9th Grade Campus, and another said Aledo girls flag football would return Sunday, Aug. 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the same site.

That kind of turnout test matters because it gives athletes a chance to feel the pace of the game and gives school leaders a way to measure demand. A clinic for Aledo High School girls means the sport is not being discussed in the abstract. It is being tried on a field tied to the district’s football culture, with actual reps, actual instruction and a place on the calendar.

The local interest also fits a wider Texas push. In March 2025, the Dallas Cowboys announced regional high school girls flag football leagues across North Texas, and the Houston Texans later said they would join the Cowboys to crown the first-ever Texas girls flag football state champions at the University of North Texas in June 2026. That kind of pro-team backing gives schools a clearer pathway from an introductory clinic to organized competition.

The sport’s growth is not limited to Texas. The National Federation of State High School Associations has described flag football as the next emerging high school sport for girls, and one search result put participation at nearly 70,000 girls nationwide last year. Mercer Island High School started a girls flag football team in February 2024, and Williamson County Schools planned its first middle school girls flag football season for February 2025.

Aledo’s clinic suggests the town is moving beyond curiosity and into structure, with a field, dates and enough interest to keep the conversation going.
