Anniston adds adult kickball to summer family sports fest
Adult kickball found a clear lane in Anniston’s summer sports calendar, slotting into a weekly Family Sports Fest that also featured 5v5 soccer for all ages, youth touch football and adult volleyball. The city scheduled the series every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CT at the Anniston Soccer Complex, making it a recurring weeknight stop instead of a one-off field day.
The setup matters because Anniston did not treat kickball like a throw-in. Adult kickball sat alongside youth and adult offerings at the same site, which gave the program a broader reach than a single-sport league. Families with younger players had soccer and touch football options; adults had a defined kickball lane and volleyball on the same calendar. That mix turns the complex into a place where different age groups can show up for the same window and still find something that fits.
The venue helped sell the idea. The Anniston Soccer Complex, at 745 Summerall Gate Road in Anniston, sits on McClellan and is part of a larger recreation destination with five lighted baseball-softball fields, a regulation football field, a soccer complex with five fields, picnic space, a playground, basketball courts and an aquatic-fitness center nearby. In other words, Anniston had the infrastructure to support multiple sports without forcing participants into a cramped, makeshift setup.

That is why kickball works here. It is one of the easiest adult sports to join, with a low barrier to entry and enough structure to feel organized without demanding specialized skill. Anniston Parks and Recreation says its goal is to provide exciting, fun and safe activities, and this format fits that mission cleanly. Kickball is not trying to be elite competition. It is trying to get adults back into public recreation, and Anniston put it on equal footing with the rest of the festival.
The city promoted the series across its calendar and sports pages, signaling that Summer Family Sports Fest was meant to be a regular part of the summer routine. For more information, the city listed contacts at Carver Community Center, Pat, 256-231-7630; Hodges Community Center, Stephen, 256-231-7627; South Highland Community Center, Micah, 256-231-7659; and Wiggins Community Center, Carol, 256-231-7628.

Anniston’s wider summer push already included soccer programming, including a Summer Stormin’ Soccer Camp and a 5v5 tournament, so the kickball addition fit a bigger pattern: build a multi-sport calendar, keep the complex active, and give residents a reason to keep coming back all summer.
