Atlantic League adds QR code to official baseballs
The Atlantic League has added a QR code to its official baseballs, turning the sport’s most basic piece of equipment into a digital touchpoint. The ball still has to behave like a professional baseball, with the same grip, seams and movement, but now it also carries another layer of identity for fans and sponsors.
That extra layer is the point. Fans can scan the code to unlock discounts on food, merchandise, tickets and sponsorship promotions, giving the league a direct way to connect an on-field object to off-field business. The move fits a league that already treats its official baseball as branded inventory, not just game equipment, and it gives teams another way to tie a familiar piece of the game to promotions at the park.
The Atlantic League has been built around that kind of experimentation since it was founded in 1998. Independent coverage has long described it as the premier independent league in the United States and a circuit whose play is judged to be at least Triple-A quality. The league also says it was the first professional baseball league to use RoboUmp, its automated ball-strike technology, and the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Inc. ratified its 2025 Official Rules and Regulations on March 28, showing how tightly it manages even small operational changes.

The QR-coded baseballs fit that pattern. What looks like a minor marking on leather is also a sign that the league sees the ball as both equipment and a communication tool, one that can carry branding, lead fans to promotions and keep the game connected to the digital side of the business. Clubs such as the Long Island Ducks have already moved the idea into home games, and the concept shows how the Atlantic League keeps testing new ideas without changing the old feel of the game itself.
That balance is what makes the QR code noteworthy. The Atlantic League is still selling the same sport played under the same seams and stitching, but it is also using the baseball itself to open a path to ticket offers, merchandise, sponsorships and other fan-facing content.
