Atlético Dallas lands Chicharito Hernández as first player signing

Atlético Dallas made Javier Hernández its first player and handed its expansion project an immediate identity, signing the 38-year-old Mexican striker to a two-year contract with a club option for a third season. The move gives the club a recognizable centerpiece before it plays its first USL Championship match in 2027, and it turns a roster opening into a statement about how the Dallas side intends to enter the league.

Brian Corcoran, Atlético Dallas’s sporting director, discussed how the club landed Hernández on USL All Access, where Devon Kerr and Mike Watts welcomed him to walk through the deal and its importance to the Dallas community. The pitch was bigger than a simple transfer: Atlético Dallas presented itself as a place where Hernández could matter on the field while also becoming a visible figure off it, helping introduce the club to a broader North Texas audience from day one.

The timing matters. USL had already announced on Nov. 19, 2024, that USL Dallas would join the USL Championship for the 2027 season, then the club unveiled the Atlético Dallas name at a downtown Garland community celebration on May 2, 2025. On Feb. 10, 2026, Atlético Dallas named Peter Luccin its first team manager, the first technical staff hire in what the club has framed as a long runway toward its inaugural season. Hernández is the first on-field face of that build, and the most prominent proof yet that the club is aiming high.

Hernández arrives with a résumé that carried well beyond Dallas. Multiple reports identified him as the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team, and his signing drew national attention from AP, ESPN, USA Today, Fox Sports and the Dallas Morning News, among others. That level of attention gives Atlético Dallas immediate reach in a crowded American soccer market, where expansion clubs usually spend years trying to create the kind of awareness Hernández generated in a day.

The business case is just as clear as the sporting one. Corcoran’s appearance underscored that Atlético Dallas sees Hernández as part of a broader launch strategy, not a ceremonial name on a release. With a globally known forward attached to the project, the club now carries new expectations around results, attendance, and commercial traction before a ball is kicked in 2027.
