Atlético Dallas signs Chicharito as first player in club history

Atlético Dallas introduced Javier Hernández as the first player in club history, giving the expansion side a marquee name before it has played a USL Championship match. The two-year agreement includes a club option for a third season, and the move immediately sets the tone for how the North Texas club wants to enter the market.

Hernández, better known worldwide as Chicharito, arrives with a resume that stretches from Guadalajara to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham United, Sevilla and LA Galaxy. He is Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, and that status gives Atlético Dallas instant credibility in a crowded Texas soccer landscape where name recognition can matter as much as a clean tactical plan in the early months of a launch.

The on-field bet is clear. Hernández gives Peter Luccin, who was hired as the club’s first team manager on February 10, a proven finisher around whom a roster can be built. Even before the rest of the squad is assembled, Dallas has a striker whose movement, box presence and finishing pedigree can shape how opponents prepare, while also giving the club a veteran reference point for a team that still has two seasons to build toward its debut.

The business case is just as obvious. Atlético Dallas is betting that a player of Hernández’s stature can move tickets, sharpen sponsorship talks and create a recognizable brand before the club’s first competitive match. In a market where expansion teams often spend months trying to explain who they are, Dallas chose a different path: lead with a star who already carries international recognition and a built-in audience across Mexican and Mexican-American fan bases.

That strategy fits the club’s staged rollout. USL Dallas unveiled its identity as Atlético Dallas during a community celebration in downtown Garland on May 2, 2025, then announced on June 12, 2025 that Cotton Bowl Stadium at Fair Park would be its home venue starting with the 2027 season. The United Soccer League and the City of Garland had already announced on November 19, 2024 that the club would join the USL Championship in 2027.

The signing also arrives with context beyond the pitch. The Mexican Federation fined Hernández on July 24 after sexist remarks, and he later said he regretted any “confusion or discomfort” caused. That backdrop will follow him into North Texas, but Atlético Dallas is clearly wagering that his soccer profile will carry the louder message.

USL has already leaned into the broader historical angle, highlighting a small group of former Mexico internationals who have featured in the league. Hernández’s arrival pushes Atlético Dallas into that conversation immediately, but it also does more than add a name to a list. It gives the club a launch point, a marketing hook and, if the sporting side follows, a genuine head start before the first ball is kicked in 2027.
