Baton Rouge Community College named Carlos Sample its next men’s basketball coach on July 20, putting a proven Louisiana program builder in charge as the Bears began a reset. BRCC Athletics called the move the start of “a new era of Bears Basketball,” a clear signal that this was more than a routine staffing change.

Sample arrives with the kind of Baton Rouge résumé that fits a junior college job built on relationships and rapid roster turnover. BRCC highlighted his 16 seasons at Scotlandville, where he helped lead the Hornets to success, and WBRZ identified him as a former Scotlandville High coach and Southern University basketball player. GeauxPreps said Sample guided Scotlandville High to 14 straight title-game appearances in boys basketball and described him as an eight-time state champion, a track record that gives BRCC an immediate recruiting pitch in Louisiana.

For BRCC, the timing matters. A JUCO program can change quickly with one coaching hire, because returning players, transfer targets and local high school prospects often make decisions around a new staff’s vision. Sample now takes over the task of shaping the Bears’ culture, evaluating the roster already in place and deciding who fits his approach to player development and on-court structure.
