Big Apple Sports Classic brings advanced kickball to Governor’s Island
Governor’s Island will host the 2026 Big Apple Sports Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, giving Big Apple Recreational Sports a fall kickball weekend that feels built for more than a quick rec-league run. The tournament will run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days, with a bring-your-own-team format and a free-agent waitlist for players still looking for a roster spot.
The sharpest competitive edge is in Open Division A. That bracket is marked advanced, mixed gender and capped at eight teams, which creates a tight field and a shorter road to the title than a sprawling open tournament. Saturday will be devoted to round robin seeding before Sunday’s playoff action, a structure that should reward teams with depth, clean kicking order and enough pitching stability to hold up across a full weekend.

The setting is part of the pitch. Governor’s Island gives the Classic a recognizable New York backdrop and a built-in destination feel that can separate it from the city’s usual park-and-field schedule. A two-day tournament on the island asks for more commitment from clubs, but it also offers a fuller event experience, from early games through the Sunday bracket, for teams that want their fall weekend to feel like a trip instead of a single matchup.
Big Apple Recreational Sports is also leaning on the scale of its existing kickball operation. The organization describes Big Apple Kickball as “NYC’s Premier LBGTQ+ social kickball league” and says the sport draws nearly 1,000 participants every season. Its open division games are played in Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen, while its WTNB+ division uses a brand-new field in the city, a sign that the Classic is being staged inside a larger, established league ecosystem rather than as a one-off exhibition.

That broader base matters because the league says its kickball offerings are very popular and tend to sell out quickly. With only eight teams in Open Division A, round robin games on Saturday and playoffs on Sunday, the Sports Classic will be a premium weekend showcase designed for squads that want a serious bracket, a marquee New York setting and a format that rewards teams ready to play all the way through Sunday.
