Binghamton names Melesky as inaugural flag football coach for 2028 debut

Binghamton University has named Jeff Melesky the first head coach in the history of its women’s flag football program, which is set to debut in Spring 2028. The university will introduce Melesky at a press conference on August 6 at 2 p.m. inside the Events Center in Vestal, New York, and a staff directory entry already lists him as head women’s flag football coach.

The hire gives Binghamton nearly two full years to build the program from scratch. The school said on February 20, 2026, that women’s flag football would be added as a varsity sport, the first time Binghamton had added a sport in 25 years, and later described it as the university’s 22nd varsity sport. Director of Athletics Eugene Marshall, Jr. linked the move to the NCAA’s decision to recognize women’s flag football as an emerging sport and to the game’s rapid growth, signaling that Binghamton expects more than a symbolic launch.

For Melesky, the job goes far beyond filling out a coaching staff. He will be the person setting the roster-building plan, identifying recruits and giving the new program its first competitive identity before the opening whistle in Spring 2028. That kind of runway matters in a sport that is still building its college footprint, because early hires often determine whether a new team arrives with structure or starts behind the rest of the field.

Binghamton’s timeline also fits the broader NCAA path for the sport. The NCAA added flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in 2026, making it eligible to move toward championship status through that route, and NCAA coverage said the first NCAA championship could be held in spring 2028 if legislation is approved by all three divisions in January. Manhattanville University has also targeted spring 2028 for its inaugural women’s flag football season, while the Empire 8 made women’s flag football its 28th championship sport in 2025-26.

The field around Binghamton is growing quickly, with schools including Spring Hill College, Daemen University and Eastern Michigan University also launching or announcing programs. That leaves Melesky with a clear mandate at Binghamton: turn an announcement into a functioning team, then make the Bearcats competitive from the start.
