Buccaneers bring back defenseman Nick Koering for 2026-27 season

The Des Moines Buccaneers brought back defenseman Nick Koering for the 2026-27 USHL season, adding a familiar piece to a blue line that has already been shuffled through multiple transactions. The club said Koering signed a Standard Player Development Agreement ahead of the season, giving head coach and general manager Matt Searles another known option as camp approaches.

Koering’s path back to Des Moines was anything but routine. In a Jan. 7 trade with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, the Buccaneers acquired Koering, defenseman Barrett Dexheimer and a 2027 draft pick in exchange for defenseman Gus Thorp. That deal looked like one more move in a winter of roster turnover, but it also put Koering into the Buccaneers’ system and on a track that eventually brought him back into the fold.

The summer brought another layer of movement. On June 11, Des Moines dealt Koering and others to the Tri-City Storm in a trade that returned forward Mason Jenson and a 2027 Phase I pick. An OurSports Central recap of that transaction said the Buccaneers wished Koering, Garski and Ehrhardt the best as they continued their USHL careers in Tri-City, underscoring how active the roster churn had become around him.

That is what makes Koering’s return matter beyond the headline. Des Moines was also operating with a 50-man protected list and 31 total selections as it rounded out the organization for 2026-27, so every returning defenseman mattered in the larger shape of the roster. Koering gives Searles a player the staff already knows, which can shorten the learning curve when pairings are set and roles are assigned in camp.

For a team building toward a new season, continuity on the back end is not a throwaway detail. Koering’s return gives the Buccaneers another experienced blue-line piece to sort alongside Dexheimer and the rest of the defense group, and it gives Des Moines one fewer unknown as it tries to settle the roster in Iowa.
