Burcar hat trick powers U.S. to 6-4 win over Czechia
Gavin Burcar turned the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team’s Hlinka Gretzky Cup opener into his own showcase, scoring a hat trick in a 6-4 win over Czechia in Edmonton, Alberta. USA Hockey said Burcar scored once shorthanded and once on the power play, and its tournament post noted he opened and closed the scoring for Team USA.
The Americans needed every bit of that production because Czechia answered with four goals of its own in a game that stayed fast and open throughout. The 10-goal start gave the U.S. an immediate result in the eight-team tournament, but it also exposed the same kind of defensive precision that will matter more against Finland, Germany and the other heavyweights in the bracket.
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup runs Aug. 3-8, with preliminary-round games at Rogers Place and the Downtown Community Arena. Team USA is in Group B with Czechia, Finland and Germany, and the next test comes against Finland on Aug. 4 at 9 p.m. ET, a quick turnaround that leaves little margin for slippage after an emotional opener.
That matters in a tournament long used as a proving ground for future NHL Draft prospects and elite junior talent. USA Hockey’s history page says the United States had won the event twice and finished in the top three 15 times entering this year’s competition, with the most recent title coming in 2025 after a 5-3 victory over Sweden in the final in Trenčín, Slovakia.
Burcar’s own profile fits the event’s scouting lens. USA Hockey announced the 23-player roster on July 27 after a selection camp at TRIA Rink in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Burcar was among the names to make the trip to Edmonton. A Chicago Mission release identified him as a Mission alumnus, while a Spokane Chiefs item listed him as a native of Coto de Caza, California. An OurSports Central item said he played 63 games in his rookie season with Spokane and finished with seven goals and 17 points.
For USHL and junior hockey readers tracking the next wave of American talent, Burcar’s night was the kind that travels well: a shorthanded finish, a power-play strike and the first and last goals in a tournament win. The U.S. got the points it needed, and it got an early reminder that offense can cover a lot, but not all, at this level.
