Butella signs extension to stay with Madison Capitols

Madison locked in another piece of its forward group when Eero Butella signed a contract extension, keeping the 6-foot-5 center/wing in place as the Capitols shape their 2026-27 roster. Elite Prospects listed the extension date as July 8 and posted the transaction on July 9, confirming that Madison was not just adding size, but holding onto a player it has already integrated into its plans.

The move traces back to Madison’s February 24 trade with the Fargo Force, when the Capitols acquired Butella and three draft picks for forward Gavin Uhlenkamp. Fargo said the package included a 2026 Phase II third-round pick, a 2027 Phase I fourth-round pick and a 2027 Phase II third-round pick. Fargo coach and general manager Todd Skinner said, “It was great being a part of Eero’s development the past season and a half,” and added that Butella’s style of play would be “a great addition down the stretch.” That deal gave Madison more than a one-for-one swap. It brought in a 2006-born Chicago native with a right shot and a frame built for puck protection, net-front work and the kind of board battles that travel in the USHL.

Butella already showed flashes of why Madison wanted to keep him. He scored his first goal with the Capitols on March 6 against Youngstown, burying a one-timer from between the circles at 6:59 of the first period in a win that also gave Madison head coach Andy Brandt his 100th USHL victory. He then scored the overtime winner on April 18 against the Youngstown Phantoms at 17:06 of OT, a goal that pushed Madison to a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. Madison later closed out the series on April 26, advancing with the kind of timely scoring and goaltending that defined its playoff run.

The extension also comes with a clear roster message. Madison’s roster page lists Butella at 6-4 and 195 pounds, a slight discrepancy from Elite Prospects’ 6-5, 194-pound listing, but both measurements tell the same story: the Capitols are betting on a large, right-shot forward who can stay inside the lineup and take on a bigger role. In a summer when USHL teams are sorting commitments and future protected pieces, Madison made its position plain by keeping one more forward from its spring run in the fold.
