Calvillo, Rubín earn Team of the Week honors for El Paso Locomotive

Eric Calvillo and Rubio Rubín both landed in the USL Championship’s Week 21 Team of the Week, giving El Paso Locomotive two individual honors after a 2-0 win over Sporting JAX. The league announced the selections on July 28, with the weekly XI presented by SiteOne and Sacramento Republic FC forward Kyle Edwards taking Player of the Week after a two-goal outing against Oakland Roots SC.

For El Paso, the recognition tracked directly to a complete night at Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas. The Locomotive beat Sporting JAX 2-0 on July 25 in the clubs’ first-ever meeting at the stadium, with goals in either half from Amando Moreno and Rubín and a penalty save from Abraham Romero that protected the clean sheet. Rubín supplied the finishing touch that put the match away, while Moreno opened the scoring to give El Paso the control it needed.

Calvillo’s selection told the other half of the story. While Rubín’s place on the weekly best XI came from the kind of attacking sharpness that shows up on the scoresheet, Calvillo earned his spot for work that often lives deeper in the game flow, the passing, tempo and buildup that keep a lead from slipping away. In a 2-0 result that featured a goal in each half and a decisive stop from Romero, that balance mattered as much as the goals themselves.

The honors also widened the picture of El Paso’s form. A pair of weekly selections after one match points to more than a strong finishing sequence; it shows the club producing in multiple phases at once. Moreno and Rubín supplied the end product, Romero handled the defining moment in goal, and Calvillo’s inclusion underscored the value of the connective play that helps a team control the match after it has taken charge.

The result fit into a season where El Paso has already seen leaguewide attention before. Earlier in the year, Moreno was named the USL Championship’s Player of the Week after scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Las Vegas, another sign that Wilmer Cabrera’s side has had multiple players capable of carrying a match on different nights. With Calvillo and Rubín now joining that list, the Locomotive’s latest weekly recognition reflected a team that is getting production from its structure as well as its finishers.
