Cambridge to host Racquet in the Square community event

Cambridge, Ontario, hosted Racquet in the Square as a push to put racquet sports in front of people who might never walk into a club. The event was built around a simple hook: try squash, pickleball, badminton and more in a public setting, with racquetball part of a broader pitch to grow interest beyond the usual indoor walls.

That setup matters in a city where the biggest problem for racquet sports is visibility. Club-based outreach reaches people who already know where to look, but a downtown-style event turns curiosity into the entry point. Racquet in the Square was designed for newcomers first, not just existing players looking for another court.

The event also landed in the middle of a broader local push around indoor racquet-sport space. Cambridge Times has recently highlighted a tennis pro trying to make an indoor club a hit, along with a not-for-profit proposal for a Cambridge indoor tennis facility, a sign that the appetite for more year-round playing options is real in Waterloo Region.

For racquetball, the event functions as a useful test case. If people stop, watch and try a sport in a high-foot-traffic square, organizers can argue the model works as a growth tool, not just a one-off festival. If it draws only the already-converted, the case for taking racquet sports out of the club and into public view gets a lot weaker.
