Campuzano, Vitiello shine as Riverhounds, Republic FC play to scoreless draw

Nico Campuzano and Danny Vitiello traded saves and left Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Sacramento Republic FC with a 0-0 draw at F.N.B. Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026. Campuzano made five stops for the hosts, while Vitiello answered with three saves for Sacramento in a match that never produced a breakthrough.

The point fit the table pressure on both sides. Pittsburgh entered the night 8-8-2 and fifth in the Eastern Conference, while Sacramento arrived at 7-5-5 and fourth in the Western Conference. Riverhounds SC Communications had pointed to a tight recent stretch for both clubs in its Aug. 6 preview, with Pittsburgh at 2-3-0 over its last five and Sacramento at 2-2-1, and the matchup played exactly that way from start to finish.

Campuzano’s shutout mattered because Sacramento forced the Riverhounds to defend for long stretches and make their goalkeeper the difference. Vitiello’s three-save performance carried the same weight at the other end, giving Republic FC a road point and a clean sheet in a game where one mistake looked likely to decide it. Instead, both keepers handled the few dangerous looks that broke through, and neither attack found the final touch.

The result also fit the defensive reputation both clubs carried into the match. Campuzano had already been included in USL Championship’s Feb. 16 feature, “11 Goalkeepers to Watch in the USL Championship in the 2026 season,” and Vitiello had been singled out in a July 3, 2024 league note that marked another milestone in his Republic FC run. Pittsburgh’s standard in goal has been high for a while, too: Eric Dick won the 2024 USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year award after tying for the league lead with 14 shutouts and posting a 10.44 Goals Prevented mark. Against Sacramento, Campuzano added his own clean sheet to that lineage, and Vitiello matched him save for save as both clubs left with one point and a result that kept the postseason race tight.
