Canada women dominate Sweden as WJUC opens with early separation
Canada Women sent the loudest opening-day message at WJUC, beating Sweden 13-2 in a result that instantly separated them from the pack in Logroño, Spain. With the official scoreboard showing only 21 games played out of 210, the 11-goal margin carried extra weight: it was not just a win, it was a declaration that Canada intends to contend deep into the Women’s division.
The Women’s side already showed a sharp divide between heavy favorites and tighter pool games. Belgium Women led Singapore Women 12-5, another one-sided scoreline that pointed to early separation at the top end of the bracket picture. New Zealand Women, by contrast, were in a much closer fight with Colombia Women, up 7-5 at halftime, a reminder that not every women’s pool will be decided by runaway scores. Those first-session margins matter in a short pool format, where every point can shape crossover paths and seedings.
Open also started to stratify quickly. Singapore Open held a 10-4 lead over Finland Open, France Open were ahead of Colombia Open 9-6, and Belgium Open built an 11-4 advantage over Great Britain Open. Ireland Open trailed Spain Open 7-4, while Israel Open and South Africa Open were tied with Israel beginning the second half on offense. The scoreboard made the point plainly: some teams arrived ready to control tempo immediately, while others were already fighting to keep their pool hopes from slipping.

WJUC 2026 runs July 11-18 in Logroño and brings together 47 national teams from 26 countries, with 1,045 players, 446 points and 210 games on the schedule across three divisions. WFDF moved the tournament to these dates so most players could finish school commitments, and all games are scheduled for Ciudad Deportiva Pradoviejo, with Las Gaunas Stadium set to host the opening game, opening ceremony and finals.
The event comes on the heels of the 2024 championship in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where about 1,000 athletes from 23 countries competed and the USA and France took gold in their respective divisions, while Canada won silver in the Women’s division. USA Ultimate said its U-20 teams arrived in Spain with 72 athletes across the three rosters and with a medal streak that has run since the United States first appeared at WJUC in 1988.
