Central Section to launch flag football championship amid growth surge

The Central Section moved to create a flag football championship and was considering expanding its playoff fields if needed, a direct response to the sport’s steep growth curve. The step marked a clear shift from fast-rising newcomer to a program with its own postseason stakes.

The section already had the sport built into its structure. CIF Central Section maintained a dedicated flag football page on its website, and flag football also appeared on its divisional-placement by sport page, evidence that the sport had been folded into the section’s standard administrative framework rather than treated as an add-on.

That move fit a wider pattern across California. The CIF Southern Section already had a girls flag football page and had announced an official girls flag football partnership with Wilson Sporting Goods. The CIF Los Angeles City Section posted girls flag football playoff brackets across Open, Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV, Division V, Division VI and Division VII, giving the sport a deep postseason ladder inside one of the state’s largest public-school sections.

Other sections had gone just as far in formalizing the game. The CIF Central Coast Section maintained girls flag football playoff information, bylaws, bracket and results pages, along with a 2025-26 girls flag football committee report. The CIF North Coast Section tracked girls flag football championships history, another sign that the sport had become part of the postseason record, not just the regular season schedule.

The timing lined up with the way California high school sports had been talking about flag football’s rise. A Press Democrat report dated Aug. 3, 2026 described the sport’s growth as remarkable and said it was leading the state’s increase in high school sports participation. In that context, the Central Section’s championship move did more than add another trophy: it gave schools a clearer postseason target and signaled that flag football had earned a place alongside the section’s established sports.
