Charleston tops Lexington, keeps pressure on in Atlantic League race
Charleston beat Lexington again and did it in the same kind of tense, season-shaping setting that has defined this matchup all month. The Atlantic League’s “Dirty Birds top Legends” result added another win for Charleston in a six-game series at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia, where both clubs kept finding ways to trade blows.
That matters because the Dirty Birds have not needed one fluky inning to separate themselves from the Legends. The series has been crowded with high-scoring, one-run and late-inning finishes: Lexington won 12-11 in 10 innings at Legends Field on April 24, Charleston answered with a 9-8 result in the rematch, Lexington then took a 9-5 game at GoMart Ballpark on May 12, and Charleston came right back with a 9-6 win there on May 15 in the fourth game of the six-game set. Two days later, Charleston walked off with a 7-5 victory after Brenden Dixon’s late swing.
The pattern points to a club that has handled pressure better at the end of games. Charleston has not just beaten Lexington once; it has done it repeatedly in the same series, in games that stayed live deep into the night. That kind of stretch usually travels best when a team is getting enough run prevention to stay close and enough timely hitting to finish, and the Dirty Birds have used both to stay ahead in the standings race.
Lexington has had its moments, too. Brenden Dixon hit a grand slam against Charleston for his league-leading 10th home run of the season, and the Legends also erupted for 17 runs on 15 hits in a 17-3 win over the Dirty Birds at CommonSpirit Ballpark. But Charleston has answered more often in this head-to-head run, including the late comeback games that forced Lexington to keep pressing from behind.
For Charleston, that is the useful part of the result. A win over a familiar opponent is one thing; stringing together multiple wins in the same matchup, with the game still in doubt late, says the Dirty Birds are doing more than just catching a break. They are closing better, and that has kept them in the mix as the Atlantic League race takes shape.
