CHL surge reshapes USHL path as 2026 NHL Draft shows split options

The 2026 NHL Draft at KeyBank Center in Buffalo put the CHL’s pull on full display: 102 CHL-developed players were selected, more than double the combined total from the USHL, NCAA and NTDP. Among the 55 USA-flagged draftees, 20 had played in the CHL last season, a number that cuts straight to the new reality in American junior hockey.

That shift has been building since the NCAA changed its long-standing rules in November 2024 and opened Division I eligibility to CHL players starting in 2025-26. NHL.com described the change as giving prospects more freedom to choose their development path, and Gavin McKenna became the clearest example of that new flexibility when he surfaced among the CHL players moving toward college hockey. The old border between Canadian major junior and NCAA hockey is no longer a wall, and elite American families are adjusting fast.

The draft board in Buffalo reflected that change in hard numbers. USA Hockey said 53 Americans were selected overall, including 14 players from USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. That NTDP total was well below the record 23 Americans the program sent into the 2025 draft, even though USA Hockey said the NTDP has now produced 432 NHL Draft picks since 1999. The American pool also spread across 16 different states, with 23 of the U.S. picks coming from players who skated in the USHL during the 2025-26 season.

The USHL still has a strong case to make. League officials said more than 285 direct NHL Draft picks have come through the circuit since 2020, and they point to a broader track record that includes more than half of NCAA Division I men’s hockey players and nearly a quarter of NHL players with USHL experience. The league also said it had 44 picks in this draft, while the NHL credited it with 32 direct selections.

Still, the CHL’s momentum was the loudest development in Buffalo. CHL-developed players accounted for 16 first-round selections, and 11 of those 16 had played in the 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge. The message to elite American prospects is getting clearer by the draft: the USHL remains a proven route, but it is no longer the only pitch with real leverage.
