Cleveland State adds three freshmen, starts 2026-27 basketball rebuild

Cleveland State Community College opened its 2026-27 roster build with three freshmen additions on Aug. 5, landing point guard Xavier Berry, wing JD Kuykendall and forward N’Jai Gosha in what the program framed as the first installment of a larger signing wave. The announcement gave Howard an early foothold in shaping the next Cougars team before the school year even fully turned over.

The structure of the class told the story. Berry gives Cleveland State a true lead guard, the kind of player who can steady the offense, initiate tempo and handle pressure in the backcourt. Kuykendall adds a wing, a position that often decides whether a junior-college roster can stretch the floor and guard multiple spots without changing lineups. Gosha brings size and interior flexibility as a forward, giving the Cougars another piece for rebounding, physical play and matchup coverage.

That spread across all three major positional groups suggests Cleveland State was not chasing a single headline scorer or a one-man frontcourt fix. Instead, Howard appeared to be building balance from the start, adding pieces that fit together rather than relying on one high-usage option to carry the load. For an NJCAA program, that approach matters because roster turnover can be fast and unforgiving, and a class that grows together can stabilize both practice reps and game roles.

The freshman designation is just as important as the positions.
