CLUBWAKA Richmond launches free-agent-only summer kickball draft league
CLUBWAKA Virginia Richmond launched a free-agent-only summer draft kickball league built for players who wanted in without bringing a full roster. The co-ed recreational league ran from July 2 through August 20, with Thursday-night games scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Richmond, and the setup made the entry point clear: join as an individual, get drafted, and plug into a ready-made season.
The registration window opened May 1 and closed June 25, with free-agent pricing set at $69.95 for early bird, $74.95 for regular and $84.95 for late sign-up. CLUBWAKA set the minimum age at 21 as of June 25, matching the company’s Richmond positioning as a 21-and-over, co-ed social sports scene rather than a loose pickup night. That structure matters in adult rec sports, where the biggest obstacle is often not interest but roster-building. A free-agent-only format removes that friction and gives players who are new to town, just out of college or simply not on a team a direct way into the league.
The Richmond listing fit the wider CLUBWAKA model. The company describes its local program as fun, friendly co-ed leagues with social after-parties and events, and says its kickball leagues generally carry an 8-game minimum season with theme nights, planned parties and a dedicated sponsor bar. For Richmond, that sponsor bar was Gus’ Bar & Grill, the same post-game venue listed in an earlier kickball listing at 2701 W Broad St. The combination gives the league a familiar CLUBWAKA rhythm: competitive enough to keep score, social enough to keep people around after the final inning.
That balance is the selling point. The draft format lowers the barrier to entry for individuals and small groups, while the sponsor-bar setup and Thursday evening schedule turn the season into a social funnel for Richmond’s broader adult kickball scene. Players do not have to assemble a team from scratch, and once they are in, CLUBWAKA’s draft structure and after-game hangout do the recruiting work for the next season.
