Coimbra FIP event spotlights Portuguese and Spanish padel talents

FIP Promises Coimbra ran from July 30 to Aug. 2 at Star Padel Indoor Coimbra, with the Federação Portuguesa de Padel backing an event built around the next tier of Iberian talent. In a sport where Spain still sets the standard and Portugal is trying to narrow the gap, Coimbra became more than a stop on the calendar. It was a direct read on how quickly Portuguese prospects can grow inside one of padel’s deepest development corridors.

That matters because FIP has used Coimbra as a recurring marker for the sport’s future. In July, the federation linked Tenerife and Coimbra in a piece about the champions of the future, and its 2026 calendar also put the FIP Junior Euro Padel Cup in Porto from June 27 to July 4. Put those events together and the message is hard to miss: Portugal is getting more of the federation’s youth and development traffic, not just occasional senior-level attention.

The Portugal-Spain comparison sits at the center of that shift. Spain remains the benchmark because its pathway is still the most complete, from academy structure to the level of pair play that turns talented juniors into reliable professionals. Portugal’s advantage is momentum and visibility. Home events in Coimbra give local players the kind of pressure they need, in front of crowds that know the names and expect them to compete point for point against Spaniards who arrive with a stronger tradition of elite depth.

That cross-border tension has already shown up in FIP team events. Spain met Portugal in the men’s final of the FIP Euro Padel Cup 2025 on Oct. 25, and the same pairing appeared in the girls’ final phase of the FIP Junior World Cup by Teams 2025 on Oct. 4. Those matchups underline the same point Coimbra did: Portugal is not playing on the margins of Iberian padel anymore. It is being measured directly against Spain at senior and junior level.

Coimbra also fits into a wider credibility push for the city itself. EUSA announced on Nov. 25, 2024 that Coimbra would host the European Universities Tennis and Padel Championships from July 28 to Aug. 3, 2025, giving the city another international padel date before the FIP Promises stop arrived. With FIP saying its 2026 CUPRA FIP Tour would include more than 200 combined tournaments across 17 new countries, Coimbra sat inside a larger expansion, but its job was specific: show whether Portuguese talent can keep closing the distance when Spain is standing on the other side of the net.
