Colorado Springs adds youth kickball to Park and Recreation Month events
Colorado Springs put youth kickball on the July 24 slate at Piñon Valley Park, where the city will pair the game with a free SofaKillers concert, food trucks and giveaways. The event is part of the city’s Park and Recreation Month lineup, and officials are asking residents to bring blankets, lawn chairs and the whole family for the 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. program.
Kickball gets its own starting gun at 6 p.m., when registration opens for the youth game. Music and the game begin at 6:30 p.m., and the evening runs until 8:30 p.m., turning a simple park field into a low-cost summer stop built around a sport that needs little more than open space, a backstop and a few bases.
That setup fits Colorado Springs’ park network as much as it fits the calendar. The city says its Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department operates three community centers, seven sports complexes and five program areas, and its Recreation Division serves more than 300,000 residents each year. Assistant Director Kim King used the July 7 Park and Recreation Month rollout to frame that work as part of healthy, connected community life, with July’s theme set as “The Power Of.”

The kickball night does not stand alone. Colorado Springs’ July calendar also includes a free silent disco and outdoor movie on July 17, and a coloring contest that runs through July 31. Contest entries are due by 5 p.m. on July 31, with one winner selected from each age group. The city is using the month to spread out small, accessible events instead of hanging everything on one marquee date.
The sports logic is not hard to see. Neighborhood parks in Colorado Springs are generally one to six acres and may include backstops or dirt infields, which makes informal youth games a natural fit. The city has already leaned on that model before: in 2023, its Park and Recreation Month schedule included youth activities such as kickball and basketball, along with a coloring contest, a Discover COS photo contest and a challenge card contest, all tied to the 1000 Gatherings Initiative. July 24 keeps that playbook intact, using kickball as the easy entry point and the park as the stage.
