Colorado Springs Switchbacks edge Charleston Battery 2-1 at home

Substitute Jonas Fjeldberg scored in the 95th minute, and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC beat Charleston Battery 2-1 at Weidner Field on July 25. Wilmer Cabrera scored for Charleston in a match that was scoreless at halftime, but the Battery could not protect the result in the final stages.

For Charleston, this was the kind of road loss that tells a little more than the final score. The Battery had gone to Colorado Springs after a 1-1 draw with Sacramento at Patriots Point on July 18, and they arrived with four changes to the starting lineup. Alec Hughes made his first start since joining the club, a notable personnel move in a short turnaround stretch, but the changes did not keep the game from tightening late.

That late phase was the difference. Charleston found a goal through Cabrera and still needed to manage the closing minutes against a Switchbacks side that had stayed patient at home. Instead, Colorado Springs turned one stoppage-time moment into all three points, with Fjeldberg providing the winner after the teams had traded goals through the 90th minute.

That makes the loss more than a simple stumble. One road defeat in Week 21 does not rewrite Charleston’s season, but the way it happened should matter to a club that expects to travel well and stay in the race. A scoreless first half, a goal from Cabrera and a late winner conceded in the 95th minute point to a problem in game management, not a lack of effort. Charleston had enough to stay level deep into the match and enough quality to score, but not enough control to finish the job.

Colorado Springs got the cleaner end of the exchange and moved up to No. 7 with 37 points. For Charleston, the result leaves a sharper question: whether this was the sort of one-off road slip that happens in the Championship, or a warning that difficult away dates can still unravel when the game reaches its final turn.
