Copper State Invitational returns, spotlighting Arizona girls flag football growth

The Copper State Invitational returned for a second year on Aug. 5, giving Arizona’s top girls flag football programs another high-profile stage and a sharper measuring stick for how far the sport has come. The Fiesta Sports Foundation’s decision to bring it back showed the first edition did enough to justify a repeat, and that matters in a state where girls flag football has quickly moved from a new attraction to a regular part of the prep calendar.

For the athletes on the field, the invitational offered more than another tournament bracket. It put elite local teams in the same spotlight, forcing cleaner route-running, better flag-pull discipline, and faster decisions under pressure. For coaches and college recruiters, it created a chance to see how Arizona’s best teams handle game management, tempo, and the smaller details that separate promising programs from real contenders.

The Copper State Invitational also fits into a broader Arizona push that has built visibility around the girls game. The Arizona Cardinals hosted an NFL Flag College Showcase at State Farm Stadium on March 16, 2024, then staged the 2025 NFL FLAG Regionals at the Cardinals Flag Football Experience Fields at State Farm Stadium on March 1, 2025. The organization has also hosted 32 local girls flag football athletes for an all-star media day at the Dignity Health Training Facility and brought four high school girls flag football teams into a skills and educational camp with the Cardinals’ rookie class, presented by Dignity Health. Together, those events have turned exposure into a pipeline, with more touchpoints for players to be seen, coached and evaluated.

The national backdrop has only increased the pressure to build that ladder well. LA28 says flag football will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028 as a non-contact sport with six men’s teams and six women’s teams. NFL.com said on Aug. 5, 2024, that men’s and women’s flag football were officially included on the LA28 sports program. In Arizona, the college level has already started to catch up: Cronkite News reported on July 17, 2025, that three new Arizona college programs had added women’s flag football.

That expansion has been matched by broader participation trends. The NFHS said on Sept. 9, 2025, that high school athletics participation reached a record high in 2024-25, with flag football continuing to grow nationwide as an emerging girls sport. In that context, a second-year Copper State Invitational is not a novelty hanging on for attention. It is evidence that Arizona is building a legitimate, repeatable system for girls flag football.
