Crewe FC demands answers over five-month padel delay

Crewe FC says its padel plans have been stalled for more than five months, and the club is pressing Cheshire East for answers as the delay drags on at King George V Playing Fields. The blockage is not the courts themselves but the paperwork and planning clearance needed before work can begin, leaving a fully funded project unable to move beyond administration.

Steve Parker, the club chairman, has tied the delay to serious financial risk, saying an extra two-month wait could put more than £1m of secured funding in jeopardy. The padel scheme sits inside a £1.3m redevelopment at a club that already has more than 600 players across 36 teams, so every missed week affects not just a facilities plan but the scheduling and expectations of a large grassroots operation.

The wider site work makes the hold-up more stark. Work has already begun on a major redevelopment of sports facilities at King George V Playing Fields, where Cheshire East Council and Crewe FC are delivering a new 3G pitch and a refurbished pavilion. Against that backdrop, the padel courts have become the piece that has not yet been able to progress, despite the club's insistence that the development is fully funded.

Connor Naismith MP has backed Crewe FC over the delay, adding political weight to the club's push for clarity. That support comes as the local conversation around padel grows broader, with a separate proposal for courts on land at the Grand Junction retail park in Crewe showing that demand for the sport is not confined to one site. For Crewe FC, though, the immediate issue remains simple: a project the club says is ready has been held back for months by unresolved council process, and the longer it stays there, the more difficult it becomes to convert interest and investment into usable courts.
