Darren Smith nets winner as Detroit City FC beats FC Tulsa 1-0

Darren Smith finished the only goal and Detroit City FC took a 1-0 road win over FC Tulsa at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday night. The South African forward’s strike was his 12th of the season and gave Detroit City the exact kind of away result that has become a calling card: one chance converted, one lead protected, three points banked.

The match never opened up for long. Tulsa spent the night trying to force an equalizer, but Detroit City’s shape held after Smith put the visitors in front, and the clean sheet turned a narrow lead into a full road win. FC Tulsa’s own recap marked the result as a home loss to Detroit City FC, while the scoreboard told the simpler story of a team that knew how to survive in a tight game.

Smith’s winner carried added weight because it came from a striker who has already shown he can bend a match by himself. In June, he authored a five-goal performance against Sporting Club Jacksonville, only the second five-goal game in USL Championship history, and the league later identified him as the current leader in the Golden Boot race after that outburst. He was also named the league’s Player of the Month for April 2025 after scoring a league-leading five goals, a run that has made him the focal point of Detroit City’s attack.

That importance has shown up in the results around him. Detroit City beat Sporting Club Jacksonville 1-0 on April 11 on an early Smith goal, then outlasted Louisville City FC 2-1 on May 2 behind Connor Rutz’s second-half winner. The club also played to a 0-0 draw with Rhode Island FC on April 4 and followed that with a 2-2 draw at Miami FC on August 2, when Eloy Room’s stoppage-time penalty save helped preserve a point. Together, those results have shaped a team increasingly comfortable in games where one moment decides everything.

Detroit City left Tulsa with another example of that profile. Smith supplied the finish, the rest of the group guarded the margin, and a 1-0 result on the road showed how efficiently Le Rouge can turn a single strike into a complete performance.
