Darren Smith ties USL Championship scoring record with five-goal haul

Darren Smith did more than win a road game for Detroit City FC. He turned Hodges Stadium into a one-man exhibit, scoring Detroit’s first five goals in a 6-2 victory over Sporting Club Jacksonville and tying the USL Championship regular-season record for goals in a match.

The number that makes the night feel almost unreal is not just the five. Detroit City was outshot 13-12 by Sporting Club Jacksonville, and the match was delayed two hours by weather on a humid Florida night. In other words, this was not a lopsided shot-volume smash-up that produced a crooked scoreline. Smith simply punished almost every clean look he got, and the visitors cashed in with ruthless efficiency.

That puts him in rare company. The previous standard was set by Mauricio Salles for VSI Tampa Bay FC on June 8, 2013, and Smith became only the second player in USL Championship regular-season history to score five goals in a match. He also became the 14th player ever to record at least four goals in a league regular-season game, and only the third to do it this decade, following Tani Oluwaseyi in 2023 and Nick Markanich in 2024. That is the right lens for this performance: not just a big night, but one of the benchmark attacking outings the league has produced in recent memory.

Detroit City did not need much else from its attack, but Kobe Hernandez-Foster delivered a goal and assist as part of the 6-2 finish. Smith’s fifth goal pushed him to the top of the 2026 USL Championship scoring chart with 11, and Detroit City said the outburst moved him into third place on the club’s all-time goalscorers list. That is the kind of leap that changes both a season race and a club record book in a single swing.

USL’s weekly notes also put Smith’s performance in the broader league context by pairing it with Rhode Island FC’s JJ Williams reaching the 50 goals, 30 assists club and Sacramento Republic FC goalkeeper Danny Vitiello hitting a shutout milestone. Those are meaningful markers, but Smith’s night was in a different category entirely. Williams and Vitiello added to established resumes; Smith authored a game that instantly became one of the league’s true reference points.
