Detroit City FC looks to rebound at Miami FC after Las Vegas loss

Detroit City FC carried a 1-0 loss to Las Vegas Lights FC into Miami, a defeat that ended a three-game winning streak and marked the club’s first home loss in the USL Championship that season. The trip to South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium in Miami, Fla., became a direct test of whether Detroit could turn frustration into a sharper road performance instead of letting one off night linger.

Danny Dichio did not sugarcoat the defeat. He said too many players had an off night and added that when a team needs to win, its big players have to step up. That framing matters because Detroit’s response was not just about effort, but about execution in the areas that travel well: cleaner defending, fewer gaps in transition, and more reliable chances when the game tightens.

Haruki Yamazaki offered the clearest counterpoint to the Las Vegas result. On Tuesday, July 28, he was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for his work in the 1-0 loss, his third such honor of the 2026 season. For a back line that was beaten by the smallest of margins, Yamazaki’s recognition showed that Detroit still had at least one defender holding his standard even as the group performance slipped.

Detroit’s confidence in Miami had recent support. The club had beaten Miami FC 2-0 on the road on March 8, 2025, to open its 2025 USL Championship season, and it swept the 2025 series with a pair of 2-0 victories. Detroit also beat Miami 4-0 and 3-0 in previous meetings, results that gave the matchup added weight beyond a routine regular-season trip.

Yamazaki’s path to that role reached back to January 30, 2025, when Detroit City FC signed him to a one-year contract with an option for 2026 after he helped Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC win the 2024 USL Jägermeister Cup. That pedigree, paired with his third Team of the Week nod of 2026, gave Detroit a point of reference on a night when the final score in Las Vegas exposed how thin the margin had become.
