Dubuque signs first-round pick Nikolai Zhukov to development deal

Dubuque locked in its top Phase I pick Wednesday, signing Nikolai Zhukov to a Standard Player Development Agreement and turning a first-round selection into an immediate part of its blue-line plan. The move secures a 13th overall defenseman who already earned varsity minutes at Hermantown High as a freshman and is moving through USA Hockey's national player pathway this week.

The Fighting Saints took Zhukov 13th overall in the May Phase I Draft, then used five of their 15 selections on defensemen. Draft-day scouting director Dan Shrader said Zhukov "has great tangibles as a right-shot and is extremely mobile," a concise fit for a player the club identified early as one of its best long-term adds.

Zhukov's Hermantown resume helps explain the urgency. The signing release says he became the first freshman ever to suit up for the varsity squad in school history, and his 2025-26 numbers backed up the milestone with 22 games played, three goals, four assists and seven points. He also scored in a late-season game for the Hawks, evidence that the 6-foot-2 defenseman was already producing against older varsity competition.

The timing of the signing matters beyond Dubuque's own roster. Zhukov is set to represent Minnesota at USA Hockey's Boys National 16 Camp in Amherst, New York, from June 25-July 1, a camp for players born in 2010 that feeds evaluation for the U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team. For a player born Aug. 30, 2010, it places him in the same national development lane just as he formally commits to the USHL path.

Zhukov also carries WHL draft history. Spokane selected him in the 2025 WHL Draft, and the Chiefs' draft recap says those players first become eligible as full-time players in 2026-27, while still able to appear as affiliate players in 2025-26. Spokane's profile described him as a mobile, defensive defenseman with "a calming presence" on the back end, a label that matches the way Dubuque is building around him.

General manager Trevor Edwards said the organization is excited to welcome Zhukov and his family to Dubuque and pointed to his "tremendous upside" and commitment. For the Fighting Saints, the signing gives training camp planning a first-round cornerstone now, not later, and gives the club a clear early answer on a player it expects to shape the future of its blue line.
