Eastern Michigan names Ross defensive coordinator to build flag football staff

Eastern Michigan added another piece to its new women’s flag football operation by naming Malcomb Ross as defensive coordinator, a move that gives the program a clear specialist before its first season. Ross will handle the defense in Ypsilanti after assisting Jesse Siordia for the previous two years, giving the staff continuity as it builds toward spring 2027.

The hire followed Eastern Michigan’s April 16 announcement that women’s flag football would become an intercollegiate varsity sport at the university. The program is set to be the school’s 14th women’s varsity sport and 21st varsity sport overall, and Eastern Michigan said its inaugural competitive season would begin in spring 2027. Siordia was then named head women’s flag football coach on May 14, setting the top of the staff before Ross was added on Aug. 6.

Ross’s title matters because it shows Eastern Michigan is treating the sport like a fully structured varsity operation, not a loosely assembled start-up. The athletics staff directory lists him as Assistant Coach / Defensive Coordinator, which aligns with a standard college football hierarchy and gives the program a direct point person for defensive concepts, situational preparation and in-game adjustments.

That kind of staffing is important in flag football, where defense depends on teaching, alignment and timing as much as raw speed. Eastern Michigan has also posted a flag football combine page, a sign that the university is already working to identify players ahead of the program’s launch. With Siordia leading the team and Ross now tasked with the defense, the program has begun to take shape as a conventional varsity staff in a sport that is still defining its college identity.

The sequence of announcements, first the sport’s approval, then the head coach, then the defensive coordinator, shows how Eastern Michigan is building from the top down in advance of its debut season. Ross’s arrival gives the program another established hand from Siordia’s coaching orbit and pushes the Eagles further toward a complete staff in Ypsilanti.
