Elizabethtown hires local coach to launch first women's flag football team

Elizabethtown College turned to Middletown graduate Michael Osayi to build its first women’s flag football team, naming him the program’s first head coach as the school enters the sport at the varsity level. The hire gives the Golden Wolves a homegrown face for a launch that starts with roster construction, not results.

The school first announced on Feb. 27 that women’s flag football would become its 25th varsity sport, then identified Osayi on July 8 as the coach charged with getting the program off the ground. Elizabethtown also created a dedicated women’s flag football page on its athletics site, a clear sign the team is being built as a full varsity offering rather than a club experiment.

Osayi’s first job is recruiting. In a social post, he said the program is looking for players from the 2026 through 2028 graduating classes, which points to a broad early search for athletes who may be brand-new to the sport. That kind of roster building is one of the hardest parts of launching a women’s flag football program from scratch, because the coach has to identify prospects, explain the game and establish standards before the first snap is ever taken.

A local hire matters in that phase. Osayi’s roots in Middletown and Central Pennsylvania give him a built-in connection to the high school landscape around Elizabethtown, where awareness of flag football is still growing. For a new team, that kind of familiarity can help with early outreach to families, coaches and athletes who are deciding whether to try a sport that has not yet been part of the traditional college pathway for women in the region.

Elizabethtown’s launch also lands in the middle of a wider college push into women’s flag football. The NCAA added the sport to its Emerging Sports for Women program in 2026, opening a route toward championship status. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced in October 2024 that it would launch women’s flag football in spring 2025, and the Minnesota Vikings said in March 2025 that it had partnered with seven NCAA institutions to create a collegiate women’s flag football league.

For Elizabethtown, the challenge is immediate and practical: build a roster, define a style and give the college a first team that can grow with the sport. Osayi is now the coach responsible for setting that foundation.
