Eloy Room stars as USL Championship makes World Cup history
Eloy Room turned Curaçao’s World Cup breakthrough into a USL Championship calling card. The Miami FC goalkeeper stopped everything Ecuador sent at him in Kansas City, finishing with 15 saves in a 0-0 draw that gave Curaçao its first point in World Cup history. It was the loudest possible introduction for a league that had never before put active players on a senior World Cup roster.
USL Championship said four current players reached the 2026 tournament: Room and Miami FC teammate Jürgen Locadia for Curaçao, plus Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defender Duke Lacroix and El Paso Locomotive FC midfielder Carl Sainté for Haiti. Miami FC was the only USL Championship club with two players at the World Cup, a detail that underscored how far the league’s player pool has pushed into the international game. Curaçao named Room and Locadia to its 26-player squad on May 19, and Haiti announced Lacroix and Sainté the same day.

The timing mattered. Curaçao is making its first World Cup appearance, while Haiti returned to the tournament for the first time since 1974. Room and Locadia started Curaçao’s opener on June 14, becoming the first active USL Championship players to appear on soccer’s biggest stage. Room’s performance in the draw with Ecuador quickly became the story of the tournament’s early days, with his 15 saves described as the most in a World Cup match in the event’s recorded history, and some reports noting he may have matched Tim Howard’s all-time tournament saves mark.

Room’s path gives the moment even more weight for Miami FC. The club signed him on December 12, 2025, ahead of the 2026 USL Championship season after he had won MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew, and Miami said he would be the club’s first active player to compete in the World Cup in the same season. FIFA also noted that Room had been preparing for the tournament in South Florida after arriving in Miami.

Lacroix’s call-up carried its own piece of club history. Reports said he became the first player in Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC history to make a World Cup roster, while Sainté gave El Paso Locomotive FC another direct link to Haiti’s return. Taken together, the four selections and Room’s headline performance showed that the USL Championship is not sitting outside the world game. It is feeding it, and on this stage, that visibility came with receipts.
