Fiesta Bowl honors girls flag football on equal all-state stage

The Fiesta Sports Foundation put girls flag football on the same all-state stage as boys tackle football on July 24, naming 50 Arizona student-athletes to its 2026 Fiesta Bowl All-State Football Teams. The split was deliberate and revealing: 29 players made the boys tackle list, representing 16 schools across the state, while 21 players were selected for girls flag football.

That structure matters because it gives girls flag football the same institutional weight as the game’s long-established form. In a sport still fighting for full permanence in many states, equal billing in a Fiesta Bowl-branded recognition program says the sport is no longer being treated as a side project. It is being counted, ranked and celebrated in the same breath as tackle football.

CG Union’s Kayla Tacker was the clearest individual marker of that status. She was named to the Fiesta Bowl All-State Girls’ Flag Football Team for the third straight time, a repeat honor that turns one strong season into a resume and a resume into a standard. In a developing sport, consistency matters because it builds the names coaches, college programs and future selectors will circle first.

The 2026 announcement was not an isolated gesture. In July 2024, the Fiesta Sports Foundation, working with the Arizona Interscholastic Association, created preseason all-state football teams for boys tackle and girls flag football, laying the groundwork for the kind of recognition the July 24 list now reflects. By then, girls flag football already had a formal lane inside the state’s high school football ecosystem, not outside it.

The foundation has also pushed the sport beyond the prep level. On Jan. 29, 2026, it launched the Fiesta Bowl Flag Football Classic, described as the nation’s first collegiate flag football tournament featuring Division I programs. It later announced a first-of-its-kind Division I women’s flag football national championship set for April 18 and 19, 2026, and in September 2025 it unveiled the Fiesta Bowl Copper State Invitational to advance girls flag football in Arizona.

The numbers from this year’s all-state list tell the story cleanly. Fifty athletes. Twenty-one girls flag selections. One of the most prominent football brands in the Southwest giving the sport equal billing on its marquee stage.
