Glass Court Summerfest Open draws 53 players in reopening milestone

Glass Court Swim & Fitness drew 53 racquetball players from five states for the Summerfest Open, its first USA Racquetball-sanctioned tournament since reopening, and used all eight courts at the Lombard club. For a venue that only recently marked the return of eight courts to Chicagoland with an April 11 ribbon-cutting celebration, the weekend worked as a clear relaunch of sanctioned play in the Chicago-area market.

The Illinois State Racquetball Association listed the Summerfest Open for July 24-26, and the format gave the event a full competitive arc. Saturday featured Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and a junior clinic, while Sunday closed with Mixed Doubles and Junior Girls Singles. That mix mattered: the adults brought the competition, but the clinic showed the club was also trying to rebuild the next layer of players, not just stage one-off matches.

Glass Court said the junior clinic drew local kids, including several first-timers from Naperville, for hands-on coaching and their first close look at the sport. That kind of introduction can be as valuable to a racquetball facility as the final bracket, especially at a time when club-level venues have to create both spectators and players if they want a steady tournament calendar. The club’s own message made the point plainly by tying the weekend to its reopening and saying the next racquetball event was already in the works.

The five-state turnout also showed that the reopening had travel pull well beyond a neighborhood league scene. In racquetball, sanctioned events matter because they give players a reason to book the trip, enter multiple divisions and keep their competitive schedule moving in a way that casual open play cannot match. Glass Court’s return to the USA Racquetball calendar gave the tournament that regional edge, and the mix of Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and junior events made the stop feel like a proper tournament weekend rather than a club exhibition.

Glass Court thanked sponsors, volunteers, staff, players and traveling families for making the event work. With eight courts back in play and a sanctioned tournament already completed, the club has turned its reopening into something more durable than a ribbon-cutting: a functioning racquetball stop with enough reach to pull players back into the local scene.
