Guinness records dodgeball’s largest game with 6,084 players

Guinness World Records’ largest game of dodgeball drew 6,084 participants at UC Irvine in Irvine, California, on Sept. 25, 2012, a mark that showed exactly why this sport keeps getting picked for massive campus stunts and charity drives. The rules are simple enough to explain in a breath: two teams throw soft balls at each other, players are eliminated when hit, and a caught ball knocks out the thrower. That low barrier, paired with a format that turns instantly chaotic when hundreds or thousands of people are on the floor, makes dodgeball unusually well suited to record attempts.

UC Irvine’s run to the title was not a one-off burst of energy. Guinness said the 2012 effort was the school’s third successful attempt at the dodgeball record, following 1,745 student participants in 2010 and 4,000 in 2011. Sam Shaw spent much of the spring quarter before the first record handing out flyers and meeting with campus officials, then worked with Associated Students of UCI because he did not have the money to stage it alone. By the time the event returned in 2011, the game at the Anteater Recreation Fields had grown to 4,000 players, 1,000 dodgeballs and 448 additional supporters in the stands.

The 2011 attempt also showed how the record is designed to scale. Guinness said the guideline called for one standard dodgeball for a maximum of four players, a ratio that still leaves plenty of room for bodies, noise and the kind of visual clutter that makes these events pop on a campus lawn or in a highlight clip. That formula is part of the appeal: the sport needs almost nothing beyond open space, a few balls and enough people willing to jump in.

UC Irvine’s 2012 target aimed even higher, with the school trying to recruit 7,000 participants as it chased back a title that had belonged to the University of Alberta, which had set the record at 4,979 players. Rochester Institute of Technology said in 2011 that it had unofficially broken the mark with 2,136 participants, a reminder that this record has behaved less like a one-time stunt and more like an institutional rivalry. Guinness said an official adjudicator was present at each successful UC Irvine attempt, giving the event the stamp it needed to count.

The record culture is still alive. In Atlanta, MOST: Men Opposing Sex Trafficking played a 42-hour marathon from May 11 to May 13, 2026, and raised more than $100,000 for City of Refuge. Guinness measures that title in hours, minutes and seconds, but the logic is the same as the mass-game record at UC Irvine: dodgeball can stretch from a quick elimination game to a full-scale fundraiser without losing its identity. With active rule sets maintained by the World Dodgeball Federation and USA Dodgeball, the sport has both the codified structure and the built-in chaos that keep it ready for the next giant crowd.
