Gulf Shores adds adult recess night with kickball at Meyer Park

Kickball will anchor Gulf Shores’ Adult Recess at Meyer Park on Friday, July 10, when the city opens the park from 6 to 9 p.m. for an adults-only evening built around pickup-style recreation. Admission is free, the event is limited to adults 18 and older, and food and drink items will be available for purchase on site.

The setup is not a league night and it is not a tournament. That is the point. Gulf Shores is selling a low-pressure, drop-in format that leans on kickball’s best trait: it feels familiar fast. One inning can turn strangers into teammates, and the game works as the evening’s anchor because it asks almost nothing from participants beyond showing up ready to run, laugh and keep score only if they want to.

That social-first model is exactly how the city is framing the night. Its announcement encourages people to bring friends, plan a date night or come solo and meet new people, which puts Adult Recess closer to an after-work gathering than a conventional rec league. Kickball gives the event a center of gravity, but it is only part of the draw. Participants will also find ultimate frisbee, pickleball, bocce ball and other lawn games, turning Meyer Park into a multi-game hangout instead of a single-sport stop.

Adult Recess also sits inside Gulf Shores’ July National Park & Recreation Month programming, where the city is stacking activities across the month rather than banking on one isolated event. The calendar includes free admission to facilities, 3-on-3 adult basketball, Tennis Tuesdays, Swim with the Guards and more, all part of a push to keep public spaces busy and visible during the summer.

The city’s Recreation & Cultural Affairs Department says its mission is to enrich lives and foster harmony through leisure services that support healthy lifestyles, educational and recreational opportunities, public participation and stewardship of public resources. The Adult Recess format matches that mission cleanly, with rules posted for bocce ball, cornhole, horseshoes, four square, jump rope rhymes, kickball, pickleball, spikeball and ultimate frisbee.

Meyer Park is one of the parks and greenspaces on the city’s list, and the July 10 event turns that space into something closer to an open-air adult playground. For Gulf Shores, kickball is the easy entry point, and that is what makes it work.
