Illinois Valley YMCA sets youth dodgeball tournament for August 11
The Illinois Valley YMCA will stage a youth dodgeball tournament Aug. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., setting aside the court for players in grades 4 through 8. The format is built for six-player teams, a setup that should keep the action moving quickly and give younger athletes a fast introduction to organized competition.
At $50 per team, the event is open to both Y-Members and non-members, giving families a low-barrier way to get into a structured summer sports event. Registration is available online through the Illinois Valley YMCA, and questions can be sent to mayaq@ivymca.org.
The age range gives the tournament its clearest purpose. By centering grades 4-8, the YMCA is turning dodgeball into an entry point for upper elementary and middle school players who are ready for a team setting but may not be tied to a school roster or travel schedule. The six-player format also encourages constant involvement, with every participant likely to rotate often and stay active on the floor.
That structure fits the sport itself. Dodgeball rewards reaction time, communication and court awareness, and the YMCA is framing the event as a competitive but approachable challenge rather than a high-pressure bracket. The prize package keeps the competitive side intact: winners will be recognized, and the tournament will also hand out a best team spirit award, a nod to the kind of energy and sideline chemistry that can matter as much as wins in a youth event.
For the YMCA, the tournament doubles as a talent and participation check. A summer event like this shows how the organization is building a pipeline for young athletes who may be trying dodgeball in an organized setting for the first time. With a midday start, a short two-hour window and a clearly defined grade range, the tournament is designed to be manageable for families while giving kids a real game-day experience before the school year begins.
