Indiana girls flag football moves closer to sanctioning in state

The Indianapolis Colts said girls flag football reached 108 teams in its "Road to 100" campaign, making the sport eligible to become an IHSAA-sanctioned sport. The milestone capped a rapid rise that already produced Indiana’s first girls flag postseason and a state champion at Grand Park Sport Campus in Westfield.

The climb was steady across 2025 and 2026. The Colts said the effort reached 51 girls high school teams on March 20, 2025, then 65 committed high schools by May 5. By Oct. 8, 2025, the Colts said 78 teams competed in Indiana’s first season of girls flag as an "emerging sport," and a later Colts update listed 83 schools participating before the total reached 108 on July 26, 2026.

The sport’s competitive structure has already moved beyond exhibition play. On Oct. 18, 2025, the Colts hosted the Indiana State Finals for high school girls flag football at Grand Park Sport Campus, where Penn High School was crowned the first-ever High School Girls Flag State Champion in Indiana. Lawrence North High School, whose Wildcats were runners-up in that championship game, was already practicing on its home field, a sign that the sport had taken hold at the school level.

The next decision sits with the Indiana High School Athletic Association, the Indianapolis-based organization founded in 1903. The IHSAA lists girls flag football as an "emerging" sport on its website, alongside links to Colts support, MaxPreps, NFHS Learn and EventLink schedules. That framework matters because sanctioning would bring the sport under the same formal rules that shape schedules, coaching, transportation, practice time and postseason access in other high school sports.

For Indiana, the numbers now point in one direction. Girls flag football has moved from a small group of committed programs to a statewide network large enough to clear the Colts’ participation benchmark, with a champion already crowned and postseason play already in place. The remaining step is for the IHSAA to turn that momentum into full sanctioning.
