Indiana girls flag football nears varsity status at 100-team milestone

Indiana girls flag football reached 108 teams on July 26, clearing the 100-school threshold needed for IHSAA sanctioning and moving the sport from promising growth to a formal varsity pathway. The Indianapolis Colts said that total made girls flag football eligible to be considered for recognition by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

That number matters because sanctioning changes the sport on the ground. It can bring a standard season calendar, stronger coaching structures, more predictable scheduling, and a clearer place in school budgets for uniforms, travel and facilities. For players, it also turns games from an add-on into a school-sanctioned varsity lane with more consistent competition and more visible college exposure.

The state’s own framework already shows how close the sport is to the next step. The IHSAA lists girls flag football as an emerging sport, not yet a fully sanctioned varsity sport, and its girls flag football page sets Aug. 3, 2026, as the first practice date and Aug. 15, 2026, as the first contest date. That schedule signals an organized season is already in place, even before final sanctioning arrives.

The climb to 108 teams was fast. The Colts said Indiana had 65 committed high schools in 2025, then 78 teams in the fall 2025 season, which was the sport’s first season as an emerging sport in the state. Later Road to 100 updates pushed the total to 83 schools, then 88, then 93 by July 16, 2026, before the roster reached 100 and then 108.

The milestone landed during the 2026 NFL FLAG Championships at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, a fitting stage for a sport trying to move from momentum to permanence. Colts materials said the July 23-26 event drew more than 350 youth teams from around the world, including 15 international squads, and all 32 NFL franchises were represented.

Indiana’s push also fits a larger national rise. Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut in 2028, and the state has already built some of the structure that could support a sanctioned girls game. The IHSAA’s Unified Flag Football tournament series, which dates back to the 2018-19 season, drew a record 46 teams in 2025. Girls flag football also staged its first-ever postseason in Indiana in October 2025, a sign the sport has already moved well beyond its launch phase.
