Judge orders padel club to pay €28,700 after broken-glass injury

A judge ordered a padel club to pay €28,700 to a fan after a broken-glass incident, a ruling that turns a single injury into a hard warning for venues built around glass courts.

The size of the award matters because it shows how costly a safety failure can become when a club’s duty of care is tested in front of the glass. Padel has grown fast enough that operators are racing to add courts and attract more players, but the basic obligations have not changed: the playing area has to be maintained, the barriers have to hold up, and spectators and players have to be protected from hazards that come with hard surfaces and glass walls.

The risk is not theoretical. In Pembroke, Elton Caruana was left with cuts on his arm and face after crashing into a glass pane while playing padel, and IK Padel said one of its coaches stayed with him until an ambulance arrived. Caruana said the glass had “shattered violently,” a detail that captures why broken panes are more than a cosmetic problem for clubs that rely on glass enclosures to define the sport.

Medical research has reached the same uncomfortable point. A 2022 peer-reviewed article on maxillofacial injuries in padel, hosted on PubMed Central, said injuries occurred because a racket bounced against the glass of the padel court. That puts the liability question squarely on venue operators: when the glass itself becomes part of the injury chain, maintenance, inspection, and insurance stop being background issues and become central to whether a club can safely keep its doors open.

The €28,700 payout also raises a sharper question for the sport’s next phase of expansion. As more clubs build ambitious facilities, the damage from aging infrastructure or weak upkeep will not end with a cracked panel. It can end in a court order, a medical bill, and a reputation hit that reaches far beyond one broken pane.
