Kentucky flag football wins bronze at Special Olympics USA Games
Team Kentucky’s Owensboro-based flag football squad closed its run at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games with a bronze medal, beating Pennsylvania 39-24 on June 25 in Blaine, Minnesota. The win capped a demanding week at the Games, which ran June 20-26 and drew athletes from all 50 states to one of the nation’s biggest inclusive sports stages.
The bronze-medal game was a clean reset after Kentucky’s semifinal loss to Indiana, a game described as a 49-12 defeat. Against Pennsylvania, the same opponent that had beaten Kentucky in pool play, the Wildcats looked settled from the start. Hunter Glenn delivered another touchdown pass to his brother Caden Glenn, and Kentucky kept layering scores behind Zach Lindsey, Walt Drake, Kevin Rates and Isaiah Smith, who each added rushing touchdowns.

Rates also made his mark on defense with an interception, a timely stop that fit the way Kentucky controlled the rematch. The box score showed a team that did not spend the day chasing a comeback or trying to survive mistakes. Instead, Kentucky moved efficiently, answered Pennsylvania’s earlier win with better execution and turned the final day of competition into a statement finish.

For Owensboro and western Kentucky, the bronze carried weight well beyond the medal stand. This was a local team on a national stage, representing its community against elite Special Olympics opposition and bringing home hardware after a week built on travel, preparation and pressure. In a tournament where results matter, Kentucky’s ability to rebound immediately after a semifinal setback gave the finish an added edge.

Special Olympics flag football often gets covered only when the medal count is final, but Kentucky’s run showed why the sport deserves more of the spotlight. The Games gave these athletes visibility, competitive legitimacy and a chance to be seen for the quality of their football. Bronze did not just mark third place. It marked a team that traveled from Owensboro, handled a difficult draw and left Blaine with a win that will resonate at home.
