Kevin Zhang wins men’s title at California State Games FootGolf event

Kevin Zhang turned the California State Games men’s division into a measuring stick, finishing first with an 11-under 55 that included 10 birdies and an eagle. His scorecard also showed a 3-under back nine, and FootGolf USA tied that result to a July 26 AFGL follow-up tournament, making the win a test of form and stamina as much as a one-day title.

That back-to-back setup matters because FootGolf USA places the American FootGolf League at the center of the U.S. game, describing it as the major league of FootGolf in the United States and saying the AFGL Tour and U.S. Amateur Tour share one calendar. The organization dates the AFGL’s founding to Nov. 19, 2011, and says the first FootGolf tournament in the United States was held on July 22, 2012, at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, a reminder that the California stop sits inside a national competition structure with real continuity behind it.

Zhang is not a one-round name in that structure. AFGL and BlueGolf materials identify him as a U.S. player, while ranking records show he was an active men’s competitor in 2020. A California FootGolf post also lists him as part of Angel City FootGolf Club, giving the result a club-level anchor as well as a national one. The scorecard notes a strong closing stretch, with the round built on that 10-birdie, one-eagle pace.

FootGolf USA’s own calendar language helps explain why the California State Games result lands with extra weight. The July 25 State Games entry and the July 26 AFGL event were linked together, and the organization said final scores would be reviewed, updated and standings confirmed within the next 24 hours. That is the kind of quick turnaround that can separate a solid performance from a statement round, especially when the next tee time comes almost immediately.

The California State Games FootGolf page places the event inside a broader multisport program, and a 2026 listing at Welk Resort Golf Course on July 18 shows FootGolf remains part of that schedule. For Zhang, the men’s title did more than add another result to the ledger: it set the benchmark for the next day’s AFGL test and put him in the conversation as the player to beat on the U.S. circuit this weekend.
