LA28 schedule puts flag football in first week of Olympic action

LA28 put flag football on the Olympic calendar in a way that leaves no doubt about where the sport stands. The Games’ first comprehensive competition schedule, released July 14, placed flag football in the opening week from July 15-22, 2028, and on Day 1 of competition, giving the sport one of the clearest launch pads of any new event in Los Angeles.

That placement matters because it is the difference between novelty and prominence. LA28’s detailed calendar showed every sport’s place in the Games, and flag football was not buried in the back half. It was joined on Day 1 by squash, while preliminary action across seven sports began July 12. For a discipline trying to move from a niche tournament scene into the Olympic mainstream, the opening-week slot means early television windows, early storyline pressure and early exposure to the largest possible global audience.

The venue choice pushes the same message. Flag football will be staged at Exposition Park Stadium, with BMO Stadium serving as the showcase site for the Olympic debut. The 22,000-seat soccer stadium sits in Exposition Park, and the updated plan for flag football and lacrosse at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics was approved by the Los Angeles City Council. That is a far different look from a temporary side field. It gives the sport a recognizable Los Angeles backdrop and a setting that reads like a main-event venue.

LA28 also defined the event itself in plain terms, describing flag football as a fast, explosive, non-contact format of American football played in two 20-minute halves. The International Olympic Committee approved the sport for the 2028 Games in October 2023, and the NFL has said Los Angeles will feature both men’s and women’s flag football. NFL owners approved player participation in the 2028 Olympics in 2025, and the NFL Players Association said it would work with the NFL, the International Federation of American Football and Olympic authorities on terms of play.

The calendar has already sharpened the road to the debut. The International Federation of American Football said in February 2026 that the qualification system had been confirmed, and in July 2026 it said LA28 will feature 14 flag football competition sessions over eight days. NBC Los Angeles also reported in March 2026 that the NFL planned to launch a professional flag football league ahead of the Olympic debut, another sign that the sport’s Olympic arrival is being treated as a growth event, not a one-off experiment.
