Largo turns wiffle ball into glow-in-the-dark tournament night
Largo is taking wiffle ball off the backyard dirt and putting it under black lights for Glow Astroball, a four-hour tournament at Southwest Recreation Complex on Saturday, July 18, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The city has built the night around a glow-in-the-dark setup with illuminated bases, a fully lit indoor field and neon gear encouraged, turning a familiar summer game into a late-day event that looks more like a neighborhood showcase than a traditional league night.
The format gives the tournament a clear competitive shape without losing its recreation-first feel. Teams will start in pool play and move into a single-elimination bracket, all under AWA Wiffle Ball rules with a few added touches for the glow setting. That standard rule base still matters: AWA’s posted format uses three strikes, four balls and three outs per inning, which keeps Astroball tied to the same structure players know even as Largo leans into the spectacle.
The event is open to all skill levels, but the roster rules keep it organized. Each team must carry four to five players, the entry fee is $20 per team, and every roster has to include at least one player who is 18 or older. All participants must be 16 or older. That mix opens the door to friends, families and casual athletes who want a real bracket without the pressure of a high-level circuit, and it gives the city a way to package wiffle ball as a safe, social participation sport.

Registration has to be completed in person at Southwest Recreation Complex by Friday, July 10. The facility is at 13120 Vonn Rd, Largo, FL, and questions go to 727-518-3125. Southwest Recreation Complex itself sits at the center of the city’s summer recreation push, with a regulation basketball gymnasium, rental spaces, a fitness center, the Largo Tennis Center, Southwest Pool, Southwest Baseball & Softball fields and a public playground on the outdoor campus.
Glow Astroball also sits inside a larger July calendar that includes Swimming Under the Stars on July 24 and Largo Evening Market on July 25. For Largo, the tournament is one more way to make recreation feel like an evening event, with wiffle ball serving as the easiest entry point of all.
