The Long Island Ducks and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs left an Atlantic League game suspended with the outcome unresolved, turning one night into a bullpen and standings problem for both clubs. Any pitchers already used before the stoppage kept their workload on the ledger, and the final result will not count until the game is finished.

The league’s 2025 Official Rules and Regulations were ratified by the Board of Directors on March 28, 2025 and updated by desk book addenda, a reminder that the circuit is built to handle continuations, makeups and compressed schedules. In practice, that means managers have to plan around the same contest across multiple days, not start fresh, and the next innings can be squeezed into an already crowded series calendar.

Southern Maryland carried the heavier disruption. A suspended road game forces the Blue Crabs to keep arms available, adjust travel and protect innings for whatever comes next, while Long Island only had to reset its rotation and bullpen plans around a resumption. In an independent league where contracts can be purchased by affiliated organizations and rosters can change quickly, that kind of delay can alter who is available when the game finally resumes.

The Atlantic League has already shown how often weather can interrupt this matchup. The league suspended High Point Rockers-Southern Maryland on Aug. 7, 2025, and the Ducks later said a June 11 game against Southern Maryland was suspended because of inclement weather and would be continued in its entirety the next day at 4:35 p.m. Long Island also used a separate weather postponement against York to create a single-admission doubleheader with two seven-inning games at 1 p.m., one of several ways the league fits unfinished games into a tight schedule.

The result still matters in the standings once the game is completed, and that is why suspended games in this league can shape playoff positioning as much as a clean nine-inning win. The Ducks and Blue Crabs have met enough in recent Atlantic League play that one unfinished night can carry into the next date with real consequence. Long Island later beat Southern Maryland 13-9 in a completion after a nine-run ninth inning, a recent example of how much can change when a suspended game finally gets finished.
