Loudoun United sells Thorleifur Úlfarsson to Breiðablik for record fee

Loudoun United turned Thorleifur Úlfarsson’s summer surge into a club-record sale, sending the 25-year-old forward to Breiðablik in a move that became the first international transfer in club history. The deal arrived after Úlfarsson had just delivered one of his sharpest outings of the season, a goal and an assist in Loudoun’s 2-0 win over Hartford Athletic at Segra Field.

The timing mattered. Úlfarsson was named to the Team of the Week on Aug. 4 after the Hartford victory, and by Aug. 8 his production had helped push Loudoun into a transfer that fits the club’s identity as much as its balance sheet. Loudoun signed him on Jan. 18, bringing in a former Houston Dynamo FC forward who had most recently competed in his native Iceland. Less than seven months later, the club had converted that recruitment into its biggest outgoing fee yet.

For Loudoun, the sale says as much about the pathway model as it does about the player. The club identified a forward with top-flight and international experience, gave him a runway in Leesburg, Virginia, and then moved him on at a profit to a club in his home country. In USL Championship terms, that is the business at work: develop, showcase, sell. Breiðablik is not just getting a forward who scored and created against Hartford; it is buying a player whose recent form was strong enough to become Loudoun’s first overseas transfer.

The departure also changes Loudoun’s attack in practical terms. Úlfarsson was not simply a finisher. Against Hartford, he supplied both the goal and the final pass that set the tone for the 2-0 result, with Gibran Aboukoura also finding the net at Segra Field. Losing that kind of two-way production forces Loudoun to redistribute chances rather than just replace a scorer. Aboukoura’s finish in that match offered one clear answer, and Loudoun’s staff will now have to decide how much of Úlfarsson’s workload falls to him and how much is spread across the rest of the front line.

Úlfarsson’s move also carries a trace of a longer transfer chain. Houston Dynamo FC previously sent him to Debreceni VSC in Hungary and kept a percentage of any future sell-on as part of that transaction. Loudoun’s sale to Breiðablik extends that arc and underscores how a strong USL season can still serve as a springboard to international opportunities, even when the next step takes a player back toward home.
