Luca Piras scores maiden USL Championship goal in Loudoun loss

Luca Piras scored his first USL Championship goal in the 81st minute, a right-footed strike from outside the box, but it came after Loudoun United had already fallen behind 3-0 in a 4-1 loss at Charleston Battery on June 24 at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

The goal was a personal step forward for the 21-year-old defender from Mappano, Italy, and it arrived in a match that quickly slipped from Loudoun’s control. Charleston opened the scoring through Maalique Foster in the 14th minute, doubled the lead when Colton Swan scored in the 41st, and went into the break in command before Emilio Ycaza converted a penalty in the 51st minute. Jeremy Kelly added Charleston’s fourth in the 87th minute.

Loudoun did create looks early, including a save forced by Abdellatif Aboukoura in the fourth minute, but the chances never turned into an opening goal. Anthony Limbrick said his side had opportunities early but was hurt by conceding at key moments, and he described Charleston as one of the better teams in the league. The result gave Charleston its third straight league victory and stretched its regular-season home unbeaten run to 21 games.

For Piras, the moment fit the broader arc of a player Loudoun identified as more than a depth piece. He signed with the club on August 8, 2025, on a deal through the 2026 season with a club option for 2027 after coming through Juventus youth teams, then moving on to Parma U17, Cittadella U19 and AC Mestre in Serie D, where he made 27 appearances. Listed as No. 33 on Loudoun’s USL Championship roster, he has been working into a larger role, and the finish in Charleston was the kind of attacking contribution that can change how a young defender is used.

It did not change the scoreline. Loudoun left South Carolina with a heavy defeat and another lesson in how quickly a match can disappear against a top-end opponent, even when one player breaks through for a first professional goal.
