Madison Capitols to open new arena against Chicago Steel on Oct. 17
The Madison Capitols will open LEGACY20 Arena at DeForest Yards against the Chicago Steel on Oct. 17, giving their 2026-27 schedule a centerpiece that goes beyond a simple date on the calendar. The opener will launch the Capitols into a new 3,000-seat home in DeForest and set the tone for a season built around weekend crowds, regional matchups and a move into a new building.
Madison’s 62-game USHL schedule includes 30 home games, 30 road games and two neutral-site games at the Fall Classic. The league’s 25th season as USA Hockey’s only Tier I junior league will begin with the 11th annual Fall Classic in Chicago from Sept. 16-20, where each team will play two games and the Capitols’ opening pair will be announced later. The regular season will end Saturday, April 3, 2027, and every team in the 16-club league will play a 62-game, cross-conference slate.
The home calendar shows how strongly Madison is leaning into its new arena. Twenty-four of the 30 home dates fall on Friday or Saturday, with two Wednesday games and four Sunday afternoon games rounding out the slate. January will be the busiest home month with eight games, and the longest homestand will run six straight contests from Jan. 15-29. Seven of the Capitols’ 11 Saturday home games are set for 6:05 p.m. puck drops, a change from last season when none of the Saturday home dates started earlier than 7:05 p.m.

The Steel will bring another layer of intrigue to the first night at LEGACY20 Arena. Chicago will be playing its own home schedule in USG Arena inside the Blackhawks training facility, adding another new-building storyline to a season that will feature two clubs adapting to fresh settings in the same conference landscape.
Madison’s most frequent opponent will be Green Bay, which the Capitols will face 10 times. That rivalry carries extra bite after Madison swept the Gamblers in the first round of the 2026 Clark Cup Playoffs, winning both games on the road by 2-1 scores. Nolen Geerdes led the Capitols in that series with two goals and an assist, while Caleb Heil allowed only two goals on 63 shots as Madison closed out the matchup with an overtime win.

The schedule release gives the Capitols a clear template for the months ahead: a new home opener against Chicago, a heavy dose of Friday and Saturday nights, and a Green Bay rivalry that should shape both the playoff race and the turnout inside a building that will define the franchise’s next era.
