Melicia Nelson returns home after Pima's NJCAA title run
Melicia Nelson returned to Fort Defiance on June 18 carrying a national championship ring and the kind of junior-college résumé that gives younger players in her community a concrete path to follow. After leading Pima Community College to its first NJCAA Division II title, the 5-8 guard from Window Rock, Arizona, came home with the tournament MVP award and a finish that made her one of the most visible players in the program’s history.
Nelson’s biggest performance came on March 21 in Hickory, North Carolina, when Pima beat Kirkwood Community College 64-58 for the championship. She delivered 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block in the title game, helping the No. 4 seed close out a 30-4 season and an 18-game winning streak. Kirkwood, the No. 6 seed, finished 30-5.
The championship carried extra weight for Pima because the program had fallen short in the NJCAA Division II title game in 2011 and again the previous season before finally breaking through in 2026. Nelson was one of the central reasons the Cougars got over the line. Her 2025-26 season averages were 11.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.0 assists in 33 games, numbers that show how much of Pima’s attack ran through her from the backcourt. Pima later named Nelson and teammate Kiley Sours-Miller first-team NJCAA All-Americans in April, while coach Todd Holthaus was selected as NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year.

Back home, Nelson’s profile reaches beyond one title run. Pima lists her as a nursing major, a graduate of Window Rock High School and a player known as “Meish,” with career goals to continue her education and give back to her community. That matters in a place where girls’ basketball talent often looks for a clear next step after high school. Nelson now offers one: a Navajo player from Fort Defiance, through Window Rock and into the national junior-college spotlight, with a championship and MVP on the record to show what that route can produce.
